Haste on 09-07-2000 by propheci
Haste has one of the most unique sounds in hardcore. There are 2 singers in the band. One of them has a punky high voice and the other has the low screaming voice. It's one of the coolest sounds you'll find. Here's my 9-question interview with Kelly, the low screamer. If you'd like to get in touch with him, his email is haste7@aol.com. Also, the website for the band is at members.aol.com/haste7/index.html.
1) introduce yourself to the people.
im kelly, im the lower screaming guy.
2) who all is in haste and how did the band come about.
Haste is Jason (guitar), Brandon (bass), Jeff (drums), myself (vocals),
Chris (vocals, the high stuff), and Nick (guitar)
Jason, Brandon, and Jeff have played together for something like 10 years or
more. I met them and started playing with them in 92. At the time Jeffs
brother Tim was one of the guitarists. Chris, Jason and I were roommates in
95 and we shared a practice space with a band Chris was in so he would stick
around and started singin on parts of some of the songs. At first he and I
were the only ones that liked it. But it grew on everyone after we actually
recorded a couple of our songs. Then Tim decided to go to school full time
and we knew Nick from another local band and he started playing in 97.
3) were you and the people in the band in any other bands before haste?
When it was Jeff,Jason,Brandon, and I we were called grimlock. Chris was in
a local band called Nail and shortly after he joined we decided grimlock
really didnt feel right so we went with haste. Nick was in a band called
mephotis.
4) what are some of your and the band's influences.
if i were to list them it would pretty much read like a record stores
catalog. we all listen to so many different things. Most everyone has really
ecclectic tastes. I as well as most of us are huge Sparkmarker, Radiohead,
Slayer, Quicksand, Iron Maiden, Johnny Cash, Shai Hulud, Cave in, Sunny Day
Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Elliot Smith, Faith No More, Jeff Buckley, Failure,
Sarah Mcchlachlan, Bad Brains, AF, Minor Threat, i could probably go on for
days really it goes back so many years now.
5) what can you tell us about the new album?
We go in to record it October 2nd and it should be out early 2001, like late
january, or early February. So far we are really happy with how everything
is turning out. There is no definite feel to it really, in alot of ways its
harder than Pursuit, but more mellow in some, its darker but in some ways its
not, its hard to say really.
6) any plans for touring?
We are definitely going to tour more than we did last year, we dont really
have anything set at the moment but we cant wait to get back out. we met so
many incredible people and had more fun than i could describe. we would like
to say a sincere thank you to everyone for that.
7) are there special things you have to watch out for with 2 singers? is it much tougher than just 1 singer or easier?
yeah, you wouldnt believe how much easier it is to trip over one extra mic
cable. for us its definitely more fun. i guess chris and i have known each
other for so long, we have sort ot a feel for what each other is going to do.
we dont consider either of us as the "lead" or anything, we just have fun.
and its easier to catch your breath whenever Nick stabs you with his guitar.
8) how do you feel about the current hardcore scene.
i know there are alot of amazing bands right now, whether you consider it
hardcore or what have you. we dont really get involved in any kind of scene
politics, if someone is decent to us, then we have no reason to be anything
less towards them. i know alot of scenes have ups and downs and i think
everyone should stick to what their pesonal beliefs are no matter what
another person says. However, i think that should be done with an open mind,
and you should at least respect that other persons beliefs for what they mean
to them. its really awesome to see two people with differing views that can
get along and respect each other because they have communicated and know
where each other stand.
9) lastly, you did a song on that bad brains tribute ("never give in") what was that like?
that was really rad to be a part of. most of us grew up listening to the bad
brains so it was awesome being able to be part of a tribute to them that they
actually were cool with. i used to skate with someones car blaring their
albums so to be able to have dr know mention our tribute to them was
incredible. it felt really good.
we really appreciate everything everyone has done for us. there are so many
people that have supported us and there is no way to let them know how much
that means to us, they have our love and respect.
